In the last years of the Tang Dynasty, a military governor and warlord named Chu Kui is out in the countryside when he happens to come across a boy who has been raised by wolves. The warlord decides to take the boy in, adopt him, and name him Chu You Wen. Chu Kui then proceeds to launch an ultimately successful coup, usurping the Tang monarch and installing himself as the first Emperor of the Yang Dynasty. The new Emperor names Chu You Wen as a royal prince. At court, Chu You Wen forms a bond with a woman named Ma Zhai Xing, the daughter of a government official. Despite his lofty status at court, Chu You Wen is motivated by a strong sense of justice that was instilled in him during his years of living in the wild. He and Ma Zhai Xing begin to form a romantic bond. And with her support, he plans to temper his adoptive father’s unpopular and overly strict reforms – and battles to foil a series of dastardly plans hatched by his scheming foster brothers. “At that time, Xiao Zhan gave me the impression that he was an ambitious person. While talking, he told me about what variety shows they had appeared on. I watched him, and indeed he was the one who left the deepest impression on me in the group. I remember he’s not young anymore. He is very ambitious and wants to work hard. He knows that time will not wait for him. I told Xiao Zhan: I know you are very good looking. I can see on TV that your height and proportions are adequate and your appearance is very refine. But I want to destroy this refinement. Because the character Ji Chong is very rugged. After Xiao Zhan heard this, his eyes lit up indicating he agreed with my point of view. He doesn’t care about his appearance. This aspect, as an actor, is extremely professional. I told him don’t shave his stubble anymore. I want to see what his stubble will look like when it grows out. And I told him to eat more in order to get closer to the character and appear more powerful. After he finished acting in the evening, he would come over to chat, talking about his confusion and understanding of the character.”
