Episode 8

Summary

It’s March 1st and time for HuaQing University’s Orchestra Concert! The day for ZhiXiao’s cellist debut has arrived! This is the day that ZhiXiao can prove to her professors’ that she is just as good as the next person to be the cellist. Leading up to the concert, she’s spent hours practicing diligently, hardly ever taking breaks. It should be smooth sailing from here, right?

In high spirits, ZhiXiao takes her seat in the string section, eyes giving the music score a once over, absently shaking out her bow arm. It’s been a bit tight and uncomfortable lately.

Outside, Gu Wei walks up the steps to the concert hall entrance. Spotting the performance banner, Gu Wei walks over with a smile, his sightline aimed low. A panned out scan of the banner shows that Zhi Xiao’s photo was situated right at the bottom in the centre of feature artists.

Inside the auditorium, the orchestra enters the stage. Joining in the clapping, Gu Wei scans the musicians for Zhi Xiao. Where is she? After some time, he spots her in the back, her head lowered, holding the triangle. Gu Wei leans forward. What happened? The orchestra begins to play.

The scene dissolves to a playback of a few hours prior to the show. The professor is seen asking Zhi Xiao what’s wrong.

“Stop. Why is your hand shaking so violently? Did you over-practiced? These past couple of days, have you been continuously practicing your cello? Take a rest this instance. Immediately! Don’t lose out on something big over something small. Don’t ruin your career because of one performance.”

Professor Jin

Zhi Xiao taps her triangle trying hard to rein in her tears. Gu Wei sits back in his seat, his concerned gaze never wavering from Zhi Xiao. He knows how important this performance was to her. Zhi Xiao continuous to strike the triangle in a trance. In a teary haze, the concert ended and the audience clapped. However, Gu Wei couldn’t bring himself to join in with an ovation.

Scene change. Zhi Xiao is seen being dragged back onstage by an orchestra friend where their peers are happily taking pictures and chatting with friends and family who came to see them. Zhi Xiao accidentally bumps the bow off of a classmate’s bass instrument. This classmate starts to scold Zhi Xiao even though it was an accident and Zhi Xiao had already apologized.

Gu Wei is seen walking towards Zhi Xiao but was stopped by the University’s principal. After a brief exchange of greetings, Gu Wei overhears the mean classmate say to Zhi Xiao, “Who is willing to listen to your poor performance?” He comes to Zhi Xiao’s defense.

“Yes, I’m willing. And I think Lin Zhi Xiao’s triangle is the whole performance’s punchline. Just now I heard that you asked her to pay for the damage. But as I can see, your bass isn’t damaged at all. But if you insist on asking for compensation, I think you need to find a professional institution to confirm the damage condition and the amount of compensation. If it’s really damaged, I’m willing to pay for it.”

Gu Wei

With that, Gu Wei takes Zhi Xiao by the hand and drags her off. Grateful to Gu Wei for coming to her rescue, Zhi Xiao grins and tells Gu Wei he is now her fan. She also tells him that she saw him speaking with the principle so he must’ve came to the concert because the principle invited him. Gu Wei tries to explain, but Zhi Xiao cuts him off telling him it’s alright because he came to her defense so she is grateful to him already. She proceeds to compliment him and a comical exchange occurs. Gu Wei tells her he will walk her home.

During the walk home, Gu Wei takes up Zhi Xiao’s hand. Zhi Xiao instantly blushes wondering why Gu Wei would take her hand.

“What are you doing?”

“What do you think I’m doing?”

Zhi Xiao blushes deeper and ducks her head, cornered by Gu Wei questioning her question. But this warm, butterfly feeling was soon shot down by Gu Wei’s medical assessment. It turns out he was examining Zhi Xiao’s wrist and after dispensing his observation, he tells Zhi Xiao she should see an orthopedist.

After being dragged back to reality, Zhi Xiao rotates her wrist uncomfortably. Gu Wei clears his throat, tells her her hand is cold and starts to take off his jacket. Zhi Xiao instantly tells him it’s ok she’s strong enough, but as Gu Wei places his jacket over her shoulders, Zhi Xiao couldn’t help feeling happiness blossom. What a warm gesture!

In her fairytale happiness, they arrived in front of her home. After bidding Gu Wei goodnight, Zhi Xiao went in still in her happy daze. After turning on the lights, Zhi Xiao, still smiling and feeling warm, takes off her jacket. Wait, this isn’t her jacket! Taking it off in a hurry, something falls out of the pocket. Picking it up, it was the concert ticket that she gave Dr. Gao to give to Gu Wei. So Gu Wei did come to the concert to see her after all! Later that night, Zhi Xiao got a notification on her phone. Gu Wei has sent her a friend request on Wechat! Oh so much happiness all in one night! Zhi Xiao accepts.

Gu Wei arrives home, his attention still on his phone. Smiling, head still bent over his phone, he greets his parents sitting in the living room. His father tells him to sit down. They have something to say to him.

After enduring his parents’ lecturing about marriage again and bringing up Dr. Gao Xi’s name into their conversation, Gu Wei took a firm stance against his parents, telling them that he and Gao Xi are only colleagues and he has no plans to get married yet.

That night, alone in his study, Gu Wei surfs online for apartments to rent.

The next day, Dr. Gu is seen emptying a luggage of books in his office. It’s revealed that he does not plan to return to his parents’ place anytime soon. While unpacking, he picks up the book on “Harrison’s Gastroenterology and Hepatology” and instantly thought of Zhi Xiao.

Meanwhile, Zhi Xiao is seen lazying on her bed having just woken up. Hearing her phone’s notification signal, she picks it up to see Gu Wei’s message telling her to don’t bother washing the jacket and to bring it to him at the hospital today. Zhi Xiao went over, picks up the jacket, and with an impish smile hugs the jacket close and rushes off.

Scene change. Zhi Xiao is seen dousing the jacket in…detergent? Wait! How come the jacket has changed colours?!?!?! In a panic she calls for Mama Lin. Turns out the “detergent” Zhi Xiao used was actually a strong solution for mopping floors that needs to be diluted. Well…how would Zhi Xiao know? Both bottles looked the same!

At the hospital, Zhi Xiao meets Dr. Gu in his office. Standing in front of Dr. Gu, Zhi Xiao forced a smile feeling nervous as Dr. Gu leans over his desk, looking at her expectantly. Squeezing her eyes shut to summon up all her courage, she thrusts the jacket in front of her and blurts out:

“Dr. Gu, I’m sorry. You can kill me or cut me up, whatever you please.”

Zhi Xiao

Dr. Gu looks at her suspiciously and takes the jacket. He unfolds it.

What will Dr. Gu’s reaction be after seeing Zhi Xiao had tie-dyed his jacket? Will he react in anger? That jacket looks expensive. Will he demand that she compensate him?

Review: Your Wrist Is More Important Than My Suit

Can I say this episode makes me react like the fuzzy-drunken-heart-eyed-cupids on cloud nine? Because darn it! Lin Zhi Xiao and Gu Wei’s interaction is EXACTLY giving me that side effect! The seed of love is growing steadily for real!

If there is a theme to go along with this episode, I would say that theme is “To Care.” There’re so many instances of caring gestures that upon first glance may be easily missed, but reflecting back, the small details are the greatest confession! Here are my top faves from this episode:

  • When Gu Wei cancels his plan to go to the seminar just so he can attend Zhi Xiao’s concert and cheer her on.
  • When Gu Wei always wear a smile every time he thinks of Zhi Xiao.
  • When Gu Wei doesn’t join in the clapping after the performance because he feels Zhi Xiao’s sadness from being made to play the triangle again.
  • When Gu Wei comes to Zhi Xiao’s defence from being bullied by a mean classmate.
  • When Gu Wei drapes his jacket over Zhi Xiao’s shoulders because he notices her hand is cold.
  • When Dr. Gu lines up to get her registered to see an expert orthopedist for her wrist.
  • When Gu Wei finds every opportunity and gives many excuses to see Zhi Xiao.

Ah, yes. The excuses to see Zhi Xiao again. Gu Wei is really amping up his approach—keeping communications with Zhi Xiao close by friend requesting her on Wechat; telling her to return his jacket next time so he can see her again; when she comes to see her in his office, telling her to get him some water so that he can see her longer. But my favourite excuse was getting her to help him find an apartment as compensation for tie-dying his jacket. Brilliant Gu Wei knows how to set up opportunities! But the best part is that he ends up using this as an excuse to keep Zhi Xiao from practicing her cello so that she can rest her wrist as recommended by the orthopedist.
