Summary
“Are you afraid to operate on that patient? Or do you want to operate but you’re afraid you won’t do it well? Think about it.”
Hospital director
A new day means new hope and a reenergized Zhi Xiao to go all-out to persuade Dr. Gu to do Papa Lin’s surgery. Zhi Xiao tried everything: flattery, humble apology, even prying to get Dr. Gu to ‘fess up the reason why he can’t/won’t perform surgery on Papa Lin. A comedic scenario unfolds in which Dr. Gu tries every means to escape from Zhi Xiao to no avail. Finally as a last resort, he ends up hiding in the washroom until Zhi Xiao gives in and leaves. But of course, not without letting Dr. Gu know that she’ll see him later.
Back on the unit, Qiu Qiu’s screams can be heard ricocheting down the hall. He had just learned that Dr. Gu will not be doing his surgery that day. Seeing this, Dr. Gu made a call to Dr. Yan to request to be in the surgery room to keep Qiu Qiu company. This will be the first time in years that Dr. Gu made the decision to be inside the surgery room.
Scene pans to Qiu Qiu’s operation. A determined Dr. Gu can be seen standing to the side observing the surgery, using his own hands to mime the operation technique and trying to keep his PTSD symptoms in check. There is a glimmer of hope here for Zhi Xiao that he is doing this for a reason.
Once out of surgery, Dr. Gu meets with Zhi Xiao in his office and explains to her why he couldn’t perform the surgery on Papa Lin—because of what happened to his teacher, he suffers from PTSD that causes his hands to shake uncontrollably. Preparing for Zhi Xiao to be upset or run out of the room, Dr. Gu was surprised to hear Zhi Xiao change the subject, telling him that she will bring back the hair loss prevention shampoo she bought for him because it’s “really effective.”
That evening, Dr. Gu is seen by himself in the surgery room dressed in full operation gear holding his instruments to practice his stitches. There was no visible hand tremors in sight.
Back in his office, Dr. Gu suddenly chuckled as the thought of Zhi Xiao advertising the anti-hair loss shampoo popped into his mind. This is really the first time for us to see Dr. Gu really smile and laugh and it was beautiful.❤️
Zhi Xiao spent the whole night ruminating about what to do and why did Dr. Gu revealed something so personal to her. Finally she got it! Perhaps when someone openly reveals such a sad secret, it is because he wants to be comforted!
The next day, Zhi Xiao heard from her University friends that there may be a vacancy on the cello team. Eager to redeem herself and prove that she’s got what it takes to be on the cello team, Zhi Xiao went to speak with her professors the first chance she gets. But her professor told her that they have decided to do things a little different this year and won’t be looking to fill the empty spot. Feeling crestfallen, Zhi Xiao goes up to the hospital rooftop to think.
Dr. Gu finds her there when he also went up to get a breather. Seeing her oddly quiet, Dr. Gu tries to cheer her up.
There’re several cellists in the orchestra, but there is only one who plays the triangle, so you are very unique.”
Dr. Gu
Zhi Xiao laughs and says she’s use to it and she’ll be alright. Because there is no problem that can’t be solved with a can of Pepsi! She turns the table and asked about Dr. Gu and his teacher.
“Is it because of “not sure”? Because you’re not sure, there is no way to determine whether your treatment was wrong. That’s why you have a mental barrier. I know you must be the genius type who wants every situation to be in your control. People like you believe that you can change the world with your strength. So when something goes wrong, your sense of responsibility becomes magnified and the feeling of helpless is stronger with you. But in fact, if you stride over the barrier and look back, it’s really no big deal.”
Lin Zhi Xiao
Before leaving, Zhi Xiao left Dr. Gu with these words: “In my eyes, you are really an extremely good doctor. Even if you won’t operate on Papa Lin, you must not give up! Add oil!”
Back on the unit, loud shouting can be heard. Zhi Xiao rushes up to see what’s going on and sees an aggressive patient’s family member shouting at Dr. Gu. Zhi Xiao rushes up and blocks the man from striking Dr. Gu with an object. Of course, she ended up being struck instead.
After getting her stitches, she caught Dr. Gu trying to compose his trembling hands in his office. Zhi Xiao decides to take Dr. Gu to a special place.
Where exactly did Zhi Xiao take him? And what happens there?

Review: Self-Awareness
I don’t know if it’s the directing genius of the director or the impeccable interpretation of the actors (or maybe it’s both!), but this episode really made me see the invisible thread slowly drawing Gu Wei and Shi Xiao together. Right now, the status between them is amicable friends.
I swear this episode is really endearing because of the fact that Zhi Xiao was able to slowly draw Dr. Gu out from his serious, solitude shell and offer him a fresh perspective and approach to heal his mental barrier. Up on that roof top, Zhi Xiao’s bright, positive, “thick-skinned” attitude (as she puts it) really contrasted with Gu Wei’s conservative, focused, purposeful demeanour. I love that! They really compliment each other well!
I really don’t have much to say about this episode except that it’s cute, light-hearted, and just a lot of self-discovery for Dr. Gu. For once in his life, by looking into the eyes of Zhi Xiao, he caught a glimpse of how others perceived him.
